Public Speaking Engineering Course: How Did Arabs in Britain Develop Their Public Speaking Skills?
The Leadership Training Centre, affiliated with Al-Arab in Uk (AUK), concluded its training course, “Public Speaking Engineering” and “Public Speaking,” on Saturday evening, 19 September 2026, at P2 Gallery in central London.
The course, delivered by Adnan Hmeidan, brought together 16 male and female participants from the Arab community in Britain, with Jordanian, Palestinian, Syrian, Kuwaiti, Saudi, Iraqi and Sudanese backgrounds.
The intensive course ran for around seven consecutive hours and combined theoretical content with direct practical exercises, with a particular focus on developing participants’ ability to communicate effectively and speak confidently in front of an audience.
The course forms part of a series of programmes organised by the Centre to equip Arabs in Britain with communication and public-speaking skills, recognising them as essential life and professional skills that have increasingly become a prerequisite for success in both the workplace and wider British society, rather than an optional extra that can be dispensed with.
Key Topics Covered During the Course
During the session, the trainer covered a range of topics drawing on the latest research and knowledge in the fields of public speaking and speechcraft, alongside authentic examples rooted in the Arab and Islamic heritage. Key topics included:
◆ Techniques for overcoming microphone anxiety, the fear many people experience when standing before an audience with a microphone in hand.
◆ Eight ways to open a speech with impact, ranging from telling a story and presenting an unusual statistic to performing an unexpected action that captures the audience’s attention.
◆ Twelve rules for delivering an effective presentation, beginning with thorough preparation and understanding the audience, and extending to mastering both the opening and the conclusion.
◆ Ways of dealing with different types of interruptions that may arise during a speech.
◆ Common mistakes to avoid in public speaking, speech delivery and presentations.
The trainer placed particular emphasis on hands-on practice, dedicating a significant portion of the course to individual exercises. Each participant’s specific challenge was addressed separately, rather than relying solely on general theoretical instruction. This practical approach was clearly reflected later in the participants’ own feedback.
Participants’ Feedback and Overall Assessment
The course evaluation survey showed a high level of satisfaction across different aspects of the programme. Most respondents gave full marks for the clarity of the course objectives, the organisation and presentation of the content, as well as the quality of the hospitality and reception and the timing of the breaks.
Overall satisfaction with the course ranged from excellent to very good. Respondents also expressed their willingness to recommend the course to others, as well as their interest in taking part in future courses offered by the Centre.
The positive response was not limited to the numerical ratings. In their open-ended comments, participants highlighted the value of the practical training and the approach to dealing with different audience types. Several specifically praised the trainer’s attention to each participant’s individual challenge and his personal support in helping them overcome it.
Others described the course as practical and useful not only for formal public-speaking situations but also in everyday life, while some participants said the course had fully achieved its objectives for them.
A Step Towards a Longer Journey
The course reflects the need among Arabs in Britain for specialised training programmes that combine modern scientific knowledge with an authentic cultural identity.
The Leadership Training Centre hopes to continue offering similar programmes that respond to the growing interest among Arabs in Britain and help equip them with more effective tools for communication, self-expression and leadership within British society.
