Palestinian flag raised for the first time at East Ham Town Hall
The Palestinian flag was raised for the first time above East Ham Town Hall today, in a move described by the Newham Palestine Solidarity Network as a “proud” moment, confirming that the hoisting of the flag was the culmination of a campaign that had been running since October 2025.
The Newham Palestine Solidarity Network stated that in October 2025, it sent a letter to the Mayor of Newham and a number of local councillors across different political parties, requesting that the Palestinian flag be flown at the town hall.
The network explained that its demand was based on the principle of equal treatment, pointing out that Newham had previously shown solidarity with Ukraine by flying the Ukrainian flag for over two years; therefore, “Palestine should not be treated any differently.”
A campaign to raise the Palestinian flag
The campaign urged Newham Council to embody the values it has long championed, including equality, human rights, justice, and solidarity with communities facing oppression.
The campaign received backing from Councillors Salim Patel and Imam Haque, alongside former councillors Carolyn Corbyn and Sabia Kamali.
The network paid special tribute to the efforts of Salim Patel and Sabia Kamali, noting that they had worked tirelessly to ensure the Palestinian flag was raised.
It added that the campaign was sustained through a series of discussions, continuous efforts, political pressure, and perseverance, including during periods when it would have been easier to “remain silent”.

The network stressed that its advocacy for Palestinian rights is not new, noting that it has been speaking out in support of Palestinian rights for years, both within and outside political frameworks.
It considered the raising of the Palestinian flag above East Ham Town Hall as proof that campaigning, perseverance, and political pressure can deliver tangible change.
It further noted that this step carries a “deep and personal meaning” for many Newham residents, particularly Palestinian locals and all those who have stood alongside them over the years.
The network concluded its statement by emphasizing that the campaign represents “justice, dignity, and standing on the side of peace”, asserting that politics is at its best when “people, principles, and humanity” are placed above party interests.
