Two Eids in One Day: How UK Muslims Can Navigate Eid and Friday Prayers in 2026
As Ramadan 1447 AH (2026) draws to a close, Muslim communities across Britain are preparing for a significant occasion. Astronomical calculations suggest that Friday, 20 March 2026, will mark both the first day of Shawwal and Eid al-Fitr. This means Eid and Friday prayers will fall on the same day, an overlap often referred to in Islamic tradition as “two Eids in one day.”
What does this mean for Muslims in Britain?
Scholars have long differed on how to approach this situation, and the main opinions can be summarised as follows:
• Hanafi and Maliki schools:
Friday prayer remains obligatory and is not cancelled by Eid prayer. Muslims are expected to attend both.
• Hanbali school:
Those who attend Eid prayer may skip Friday prayer and instead perform the Dhuhr prayer. However, mosques should still hold Friday prayers.
• Shafi‘i school:
The concession applies mainly to those living far from mosques. For city residents, such as in London, Manchester, and Birmingham, Friday prayer remains obligatory.
• Ja‘fari (Shi‘i) view:
Those who attend Eid prayer can choose whether to attend Friday prayer but must still perform Dhuhr. Imams, however, must still lead Friday prayer.
Guidance for Muslims in the UK
The European Council for Fatwa and Research has adopted a balanced approach for Muslims living in Britain:
• It allows those who attend Eid prayer to take the concession and pray Dhuhr instead of Friday prayer, especially given work and study commitments.
• At the same time, mosques should continue to hold Friday prayers for those who wish to attend.
Those who are able are encouraged to attend both prayers to gain the full spiritual benefit.
A moment of unity and ease
The coincidence of Eid and Friday prayer is seen as a blessing and an opportunity to bring communities together. Whether choosing to attend both prayers or taking the concession, the focus remains on ease, unity, and respecting the diversity of Islamic scholarship across Britain.
