As Syria emerges from over a decade of conflict, the country faces a critical crossroads. While the initial imposition of sanctions targeted the Assad regime, their continuation now risks obstructing Syria’s recovery and exacerbating the suffering of its people.

A new petition is calling on the UK government to remove all sanctions on Syria, allowing the country to rebuild without economic restrictions that harm ordinary citizens.

Why Should Sanctions Be Lifted?

Sanctions were once seen as a necessary tool to apply pressure on the Syrian government, but the situation has drastically changed. With the regime no longer under the same conditions that warranted such measures, maintaining sanctions only deepens the humanitarian crisis. Millions of Syrians, who have already endured immense hardship, now face additional obstacles to accessing food, medicine, and rebuilding efforts due to economic restrictions.

Organisations like Action For Humanity (AFH) have consistently highlighted the unintended consequences of these sanctions. Although humanitarian exemptions exist, they often fail to prevent aid delays and increased costs, making it harder for relief organisations to operate effectively.

  • Over 90% of Syrians live below the poverty line.
  • More than 13 million Syrians struggle to afford quality food.
  • At least 16.5 million people require humanitarian aid.

The Growing Support for Change

The petition, created by Mohamad Abou Shamat, is gaining traction, with 2,033 signatures so far. If the petition reaches:

  • 10,000 signatures – The UK government will be required to issue an official response.
  • 100,000 signatures – The petition will be considered for a debate in Parliament.

This is a crucial opportunity to make a real impact on UK policy toward Syria and push for the urgent removal of harmful sanctions.

Syrians deserve a chance to rebuild. By lifting sanctions, the UK would be taking a step towards supporting their recovery rather than prolonging their suffering. Sign the petition and be part of the movement advocating for a new approach that prioritises people over politics.
