Kareem Dennis, widely known as Lowkey, is being honoured at the 2024 Al Arab in UK (AUK) Gala Dinner for his activism and artistic contributions. Lowkey has become a prominent advocate for Palestinian rights, leveraging both his music and public engagements to raise awareness. This year’s event, under the theme “United for Gaza,” will take place on October 21, 2024, at Richmond Hall, Hilton London Metropole, celebrating figures who have made significant efforts in support of humanitarian causes in Gaza.

Who is Lowkey?

Lowkey’s career began in the early 2000s, gaining prominence in the UK hip-hop scene with his sharp lyrics and socially conscious themes. Born to an Iraqi mother and British father, his music often explores topics such as imperialism, colonialism, racism, and class struggles.

His critically acclaimed albums include Soundtrack to the Struggle (2011) and Soundtrack to the Struggle 2 (2019), both of which feature collaborations with prominent activists and musicians, including Noam Chomsky, Akala, and Palestinian artist Shadia Mansour.

Lowkey has also been deeply involved in humanitarian work, traveling to Palestinian refugee camps and supporting initiatives that raise awareness of the plight of Palestinians. His track “Long Live Palestine” has become an anthem for Palestinian solidarity movements, showcasing his commitment to advocacy beyond just music.

Key Accomplishments in 2024

Lowkey’s activism has been especially impactful this year, with highlights including two appearances on Piers Morgan Uncensored. During these heated interviews, he boldly confronted Piers Morgan about media bias regarding Palestine, criticizing Morgan’s ties to Rupert Murdoch, a known supporter of Israel’s political elite. These debates sparked widespread conversation on social media, gaining millions of views, and further solidified Lowkey’s role as an outspoken voice for justice and accountability in media representation of the Middle East conflict.

Additionally, Lowkey faced intense censorship efforts in 2024. A campaign led by pro-Israel lobby group We Believe in Israel attempted to remove his music from Spotify, labeling it problematic due to its pro-Palestinian content. Despite this, the censorship attempt backfired, triggering an outpouring of public support for Lowkey, with high-profile figures like Noam Chomsky, Naomi Klein, and Mark Ruffalo publicly standing in solidarity with him. This show of support highlighted the growing resistance to efforts aimed at silencing Palestinian advocacy in the arts.

Lowkey also released new music this year, continuing his tradition of blending art with activism. His latest album has further amplified his political messages, focusing on themes of imperialism and resistance, making it a critical part of his ongoing efforts to raise awareness about injustices in Palestine.

Attendees of the AUK Gala Dinner will have the opportunity to connect with Lowkey and other honourees. Tickets are available for £100 (regular seating) and £500 (premium seating), with proceeds going to Action For Humanity’s projects in Gaza. Book your seat here.
