On 11 October, Wales will start implementing the new covid-19 safety rules. The Welsh will soon need to provide evidence of vaccination or negative tests to join public activities and entering nightclubs.

According to the BBC, the new regulations were highly contentious between ministers and barely managed approval.

Where will you need a Covid pass in Wales?

  1. Indoor no-seating events with more than 500 people
  2. Outdoor no-seating events with more than 4,000 people
  3. Any event with more than 10,000 people
  4. At nightclubs

Who can get a Welsh covid pass?

  • Anyone over the age of 16 and has been fully vaccinated in Wales or England
  • Anyone who had a negative lateral flow test result within the past 48 hours

Users who want to show a negative test will have to self-certify their result, says the BBC. That led to potential threat of faking negative results. To prevent this, the Welsh government wants to illegalize faking a negative test.

Due to difficulty of check each individual’s covid pass in bigger events, it could be allowed to check passes at random.

Safety or Freedom?

Hundreds gathered on the Senedd steps on Tuesday to protest against the measures.

Welsh Conservative health spokesman Russell George said the implementation of Covid passes had been a “complete disaster” in Scotland.

He said the use of them at the Labour Party conference in Brighton had also been “plagued with problems”.

He warned bringing in Covid passes in Wales risked turning the nation into a “two-tiered society” and “undermines freedom of choice”, according to BBC.
